‘Tis the Season to launch our Sharing is Caring Parent Education Classes! One of our largest Collaborative Community Projects is the Sharing is Caring Christmas Store hosted by the local Salvation Army and other collaborative partners. Each year local agencies partner together to provide parent education for Dalton Public Schools, Whitfield County Schools, and local daycares to provide a variety of parent education opportunities for parents in our community to choose from. This community wide initiative seeks to provide both educational opportunities that strengthen families, as well as economic support during the Christmas Season.

For this year’s lineup, we have classes focused on Resilient Parenting, Teen Dating Violence, Citizen Power Lab, Mental Illness and Our Children and Youth, Financial Literacy Topics, Risks of Synthetic Dyes, Emergency Preparedness, and more. Classes will be offered at a variety of venues and on different days and times to better accommodate parents’ work schedules. Mack Gaston Community Center and the Dalton/Whitfield Library are both centrally located venues that have a variety of options for parents. Classes will be taught between September 9th-November 5th.

All parents who participate in 3 classes, or 3 hours, of Parent Education will meet the eligibility requirements to apply for the Christmas Store that will open on Saturday, December 21st at the North Georgia Fairgrounds. Parents bring their certificates along with other required documents to the Salvation Army during Application Week to get their schedule time to shop. Some of the benefits of this program includes an outfit for each child in the home birth-high school graduation, a gift card for food over the holidays, and parents get to select gifts for each child based upon their interest.

This program is supported by the benevolence of our community. Businesses, churches, agencies, and individuals all play a vital role in making this program a reality. From hosting classes, to donating items, providing financially, or volunteering, the whole community shows up and shines bright!
